Niacinamide Helps Fight Skin Cancer According to Researchers

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS) common skin cancers tend to grow slowly and can be cured if found and treated early. These types of skin cancer include basal and squamous cell carcinoma. A more dangerous type of skin cancer called melanoma accounts for just 73,000 cases a year, according to the ACS.

Niacinamide (Vit B3) Helps Reduce Some Skin Cancers

In an Australian clinical trial, people who took two pills a day of nicotinamide (also known as niacinamide), a form of vitamin B3 available as a nutritional supplement, had a 23 percent lower risk of developing non-melanoma skin cancer than those who took placebo pills.

As reported by NBC News

“The Australian researchers tested it on 386 people who had already been diagnosed with skin cancer – either squamous cell or basal cell carcinoma. These are extremely common and slow-growing cancers, much less serious than melanoma…

The volunteers took either two 500 mg vitamin B3 pills a day for a year, or a placebo. After a year, those who took the B3 were 23 percent less likely to have another cancer diagnosed…

The pills also reduced the numbers of pre-cancerous lesions called actinic keratosis. These thick, scaly patches of skin were reduced by 20 percent among the volunteers who took nicotinamide after nine months of treatment.”

What Dermatologists Say About Niacinamide

According to an article in the Huffington Post, Dr Richard Schilsky, reports that the vitamin niacinamide is a cheap and easy way to lower the risk of skin cancers.

Dr. Tanya Kormeili, board certified dermatologist in Los Angeles, is interviewed on NBC nightly news on the recent findings and research in the use of Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) and skin cancer prevention.

In an interview with Great Earth Pharmacy, Dr Kormeili stated “while this is a very interesting study, it’s important to remember that sun protection is still the key to preventing skin cancer”.
